Opinion: Hot Issue - Should text messages be used to offer maleprostitutes help?

3 mins read

YES - Ciaran McKinney, regional manager, SW5 (sex workers and young people)

We already use text messaging and email as outreach tools for young male and transgender escorts, so we're clearly in favour of this approach.

We find young men's phone numbers from adverts they put in the press and on the internet, and make contact with them.

Barnardo's is also getting numbers from where they're being advertised, and using toilet walls is a very innovative idea. There is a higher degree of choice and a lower degree of coercion involved with the men we work with than those Barnardo's is targeting. I wonder about the tone of the messages they are sending but, having worked with Barnardo's, I'm sure it knows what it's doing.
