Weighing in at a hefty 2kg, the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services is nothing if not comprehensive.
The framework lays down the standards around which health services for children, young people and their parents will develop over the next decade.
Its scope is so wide that it will affect everyone who works with young people in England (YPN, 15-21 September, p2).
Radical overhaul
At the document's launch, health minister Stephen Ladyman described it as "the biggest and most complex" of the various health service frameworks published so far. Margaret Hodge, youth minister, heralded the framework's arrival as "a great day for children", while Professor Al Aynsley-Green, the Great Ormond Street paediatrician who led on the framework, billed it as "historic".
