Aid for schools to help deaf children

Education
The National Deaf Children's Society has launched a package of measures to help schools stop children with hearing problems missing out on education.

The free Acoustics Toolkit is designed to help schools to identify problems in listening environments and make simple adjustments, such as adding carpeted flooring, to help make speech clearer.

Sean Moran, director of UK services at the society, said: "We urge local authorities to take full advantage of this toolkit to improve their environments."

There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK, 80 per cent of whom attend mainstream schools. Research has shown more than one million children in Britain have hearing problems.
