
The call from deaf children's charity Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) comes as Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak prepares to announce his Budget and is expected to focus on the levelling-up of the UK’s workforce and fund further catch-up schemes for disadvantaged children.
It also coincides with World Hearing Day (3 March) and the publication of a YouGov survey of more than 2,000 adults, commissioned by AVUK.
The study found that just 37 per cent of those asked believe a child born profoundly deaf can learn to speak as well as their hearing peers.
