Advice and guidance: Home-grown advisers

5 mins read
Connexions Black Country is taking its own advice by providing young people with employment chances. Helen Gregory reports on how its young adviser scheme is working.

Javin is part of a ground-breaking scheme that employs unqualified workers who earn while they learn. He appreciates being given the chance to act as a role model to young people who visit Connexions. He says: "They can identify with me and I hope I encourage them to stay out of trouble. I can show them that it's not the end of the world if you haven't got good GCSEs."

Javin and the six others taking part in the initiative help shape the services delivered by Connexions. They are also part of the partnership's Youth Forum and develop user groups where young people are urged to have a say in how the service is structured. This helps the partnership provide services that young people want, which in turn helps it meet its quarterly targets.
