Peter Westgarth, the scheme's new chief executive, told YPN: "A lot of work is going on to recognise the least well-known and least well-publicised elements of the award. For example, thousands of hours in voluntary service aren't necessarily recognised as part of the award.
"People tend to see the award as an expedition, because that is what hits the headlines. That is good, because it is an important part of the award, but it is not the only thing, and we need to make sure we get the broader dimensions of the award across."
Details of the year-long celebrations will be revealed next month and are likely to include a concert and fundraising events. A team headed by the explorer David Hempleman-Adams is developing the celebrations.
