Abuse: Council of Europe adopts regulations

The Council of Europe has adopted a number of recommendations that could help stop violence against children.

In a debate last week the council's parliamentary assembly acceptedrecommendations to draw up procedures to help stop the abuse of childrenthrough violence, exploitation or abuse. This includes corporalpunishment, such as smacking, child trafficking and sexual abuse.Members of the assembly, including the UK, were encouraged to sign up tothe recommendations.

Adopting the campaign to stamp out violence against children, TerryDavis, secretary general of the Council of Europe, told the assembly:"We want the countries of Europe not only to adopt laws, but to devisecomprehensive national strategies to promote children's rights."
