A Mediterranean-themed garden created with flowers and plants by young people from Southend Youth Offending Service (YOS) has won a major award.
The vibrant display, which included vines, olives, tomatoes, peppers and a host of other vegetation linked with warmer climes, clinched a silver award in the inspiring spaces category at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show earlier this month. The project was part of a wider programme run by the YOS to help young people put their energy to good use.
The work was undertaken to a professional standard by young people aged 14 to 18, to develop skills that help them become effective members of the community and boost their job prospects. These included team working, communication and interpersonal skills as well as dedication and commitment.
