A consultation paper is aiming to make sure schools are prepared to face the challenges the 21st century will throw at them.

We keep hearing about record exam results. Everything's fine with schools isn't it? What government ever got re-elected saying everything's fine? No, you say everything's getting better, but now we're going to make it even more wonderful. With the strategy in this consultation we're aiming for "world-class schools". Where we go when we've achieved that is anyone's guess.

Enough with the sarcasm, what's behind this? The overall rationale is that the 21st century will place exceptional demands on young people. Passing exams, or having highly developed technical skills, is not going to be enough. Young people need to be equipped to cope with risk, uncertainty and change. More than ever before they need to think and work independently, to show persistence and to be able to work with others in a diverse society.
