Three years ago, the local primary school in the small town of Wombwell, South Yorkshire was faring badly. Pupil attainment levels were poor in an area where poverty, obesity and teenage pregnancy rates exceed national averages.
Something had to change. So the council decided the school should be rebuilt and a 21st century learning centre was born. Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre now caters for 400 children aged from birth to 11. As the hub of the local community, it offers nursery places, daycare, health, social care and parent support services, and, of course, education. Children and families can also access a range of activities from yoga sessions to adult learning.
