Time for 21st-century youth workers

What are youth workers for? It might be a difficult question - but it's time we asked it again. And you know me, I'm always happy to bring an elephant into the room.

Most people think we're here to organise things for young people to do. And why would we want to do that? To keep them off the streets, stupid. Young people might have a better idea of what we do. But don't bet on it.

Like it or not, this is how it is. And while we might want youth workers recognised as being able to offer a lot more than just structured youth activities, the truth is that we can't always do that very well.

Most youth workers have undertaken some form of training. For many of us this was a diploma or degree, while for others it was a local qualification. But whatever route you took, the chances are it came to an abrupt halt.
