Happy New Year. I'm sure a few of you will be glad to be back at work just to get away from that wireless broadband router that won't connect to the internet.

Or maybe it's a new mobile phone with predictive text that you just can't switch off. When it comes to technology, if Christmas is a time for giving, then New Year is a time for giving up.

If it makes you feel any better, we've all been there - the 200-page instruction manual in one hand and infuriating small gadget in the other.

In fact, I'm there right now. I've decided to try to start using an electronic diary as one of my New Year resolutions. It sounds like it should be easy enough, but I've got used to marking up my appointments with a pencil. And now I have to provide all sorts of additional information. Do I want a reminder? Is that a recurring appointment? What time zone will I be holding the meeting in?
