Young people to review Birmingham youth service cuts

Young people in Birmingham are to have their say on how savings should be made to the youth service as part of a review process, it has emerged.

A petition handed to councillors, signed by more than 15,000 young people, urged the council to show restraint in the way savings are made.

This has led to the council inviting young people to play a role in a review process that will deliver an interim report by the end of the year, with a full report due by early summer next year.

Les Lawrence, lead for children, young people and families at the council, told CYP Now that £1.5m in savings have been made in the current financial year and a further £500,000 must be made next year.

"As a result of the petition being considered earlier this year it was decided that a scrutiny committee would undertake a review into youth services," he said. "Young people in the city will be an integral part of the review process. It is something I am very keen to support."
