Young people praise councils' efforts to tackle unemployment

Youth politicians have welcomed a rise in the number of councils finding innovative ways to reduce youth unemployment.

At a British Youth Council (BYC) and Local Government Association youth summit, council support for young people out of work emerged as a key topic of debate put forward by councillors.

Ensuring council services prioritise the most disengaged young people and giving young people a role in designing local services were also raised as key issues by delegates.

BYC chief executive James Cathcart said: "The debate picked up on something that I have already started to see – that councils are taking measures to tackle youth unemployment much more seriously."

One of the measures the BYC would like to see taken by local authorities is ensuring that council contractors take on young apprentices, Cathcart added.
