Politicians debate plan to tackle youth unemployment in Scotland

Leading UK politicians have gathered in Scotland to discuss youth unemployment after official figures revealed that around 103,000 people aged between 16 and 24 are now out of work in Scotland.

The National Convention on Youth Employment in Dundee was chaired by Scottish Secretary Michael Moore, and also attended by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, Scotland's Finance Secretary John Swinney and youth employment minister Angela Constance.

A Scotland Office spokesman said the National Convention on Youth Employment brought politicians north and south of the border together with public and private-sector organisations to "look at the issue, find the practical steps to support those who are out of work and help remove the barriers they face".

"This is an extremely important issue and the convention builds on the work the Secretary of State has been doing around Scotland," the spokesman added.
