Scotland unveils plan to tackle youth unemployment

1 min read Careers
The Scottish government has unveiled plans to create 230,000 additional training places over five years for young people as part of its strategy to address rising unemployment.

The draft strategy, published today (31 January), reveals that the Scottish government will build on its Opportunities for All programme, extending it to offer an additional 46,000 training places, including 25,000 Modern Apprenticeship opportunities, in each of the next five years.

In addition, £4m will be provided to support local authorities in the ongoing national expansion of Activity Agreements – packages of tailored activity and learning to re-engage young people furthest from the labour market.

The education maintenance allowance, which has been scrapped in England, will also be maintained "to provide financial support to those young people who need it most".

A more intensive support service for those young people most likely to disengage from learning and employment will also be introduced.
