Youth unemployment continues to soar

Youth unemployment has risen to its highest level since 1992, increasing by more than 50,000 in the space of three months.

Latest figures provided by the Office for National Statistics show there were 1.03 million unemployed 16- to 24-year-olds in the three months to October 2011, up 54,000 from the three months to July 2011.

The number of unemployed 16- to 17-year-olds increased by 8,000 on the quarter to reach 211,000 and the number of unemployed 18- to 24-year-olds rose by 46,000 on the quarter to reach 815,000.

The government last month announced a £1bn fund to tackle youth unemployment although much of the investment does not kick in until next April.

Barnardo’s chief executive Anne Marie Carrie said: "Today’s statistics represent yet again the plight of a generation of young people who are seeking but not finding opportunities to learn and to earn.
