
At an event in London to promote the Youth Contract – the government’s flagship youth employment programme – he said the scheme would "make sure every unemployed young person starts earning or learning again before long-term damage is done".
The event also marked the formal backing of the programme from the Confederation of British Industry, British Chambers of Commerce, British Retail Consortium and Federation of Small Businesses.
The Youth Contract was announced last November and offers payments to firms to encourage them to take on apprentices and offer work experience places to young people.
This followed the coalition government’s scrapping of the previous Labour government’s Future Jobs Fund initiative.
