A Labour Party source has informed Children Now that the Chancellor -the favourite to succeed Tony Blair - is planning a major restructuringof central government soon after he gets the top job. As part of this,the youth justice remit is likely to move away from the Home Office andcome under the control of the children's minister.
The source told Children Now: "It's not just a restructure of the HomeOffice and youth justice, but part of a wholesale reorganisation ofcentral government."
The positioning of youth justice in central government has beencontentious for many in the children's and prison reform sectors whofeel that Home Office policy on juvenile offenders has failed to link upwith the Every Child Matters agenda.
