Young offenders: Youth Justice Board steps up its preventativework

1 min read
The Youth Justice Board intends to do more to stop the "demonisation" of young people and wants youth offending teams to act more independently.

Published last week, the Towards A Youth Crime Prevention Strategyconsultation sets out plans for the board's future work on stoppingyouth crime.

It suggests the board's communications team attempts to reduce thedemonisation of young people in the media and increase public awarenessof crime prevention work.

The document also says the board should encourage and help youthoffending teams in England and Wales develop local strategies andapproaches to reduce offending by children. And the board should pressfor local area agreements between councils and central government toinclude a focus on youth crime.

Other plans in the document include lobbying the Government to refocuspolice arrest targets on serious offences, so forces do not concentrateon catching young people who commit minor offences to meet theirtargets.
