1 min read
Children's charities this week reacted with dismay at the shock resignation of Youth Justice Board chair Rod Morgan.

Morgan quit last week after Home Office ministers decided not to renewhis contract, which ends in April. In an interview on the BBC'sNewsnight, Morgan accused ministers of "piecemeal" lawmaking and blamedthe Government's anti-social behaviour drive for overcrowding in theyouth custody system.

"I regard the 26 per cent increase in the number of children and youngpeople being drawn into the (youth justice) system over the last threeyears as swamping," he said. "What we shouldn't be doing is clutteringup the caseloads of youth offending teams and the Probation Service withminor offenders."

Morgan, who Children Now understands timed his announcement to causemaximum damage to the Home Office, called for more money to be spent oncrime prevention.
