Westminster seeks 'record breaking' increase in cost of holiday play schemes

Families in Westminster could be hit by a 545 per cent hike in the cost of holiday play schemes under proposals being put forward by the council.

Westminster City Council’s Labour group says this is the biggest increase in charges ever proposed by a local authority, but the council insists the issue is part of wider reviews that are necessary in the current financial climate.

Westminster is currently holding a consultation on the plan, which would see charges for children’s holiday play schemes rise from £22 to £120 a week while children’s after-school play provision would go from £8.30 to £30 a week, an increase of 360 per cent. 

Councillor Nickie Aiken, the council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "For many years Westminster has, in contrast to other councils, heavily subsidised its play services.
