Number of Westminster families housed in B&Bs rises despite government warning

The number of families with children placed in long-term bed and breakfast accommodation in Westminster rose from 36 to 100 in the past three months because of increasing demand on housing, the London borough has claimed.

In a meeting of the council’s housing scrutiny committee this week, lead member for housing Jonathan Glanz said that the number of families who have been living in bed and breakfasts for more than six weeks currently stands at 100.

Under legislation councils are only permitted to house families with dependent children in bed and breakfast accommodation as an emergency measure, and not for more than six weeks.

In April, housing minister Grant Shapps wrote to Westminster Council after it reported having 36 families in bed and breakfast accommodation for more than six weeks.

Shapps said he had asked Department for Communities and Local Government officials to support Westminster to reduce the number of families in unsuitable accommodation.
