Weekend working has negative impact on children, charity warns

Three quarters of working families are affected by a parent working at the weekend, research from the Relationships Foundation has found.

At the beginning of National Family Week the charity claimed that out of 6.5 million families most are affected by weekend working and almost a quarter 1.56 million have a parents who works on Sundays. One in five working families have a parent who works regularly on both Saturdays and Sundays according to the foundation.

Michael Trend, executive director of the Relationships Foundation, said: "It is a sobering thought that as many of us enjoy a lazy  Sunday with friends and family, millions of children across the country are deprived of the company of their parents.

"It is even more sobering when you think that these are often the very children who need time with parents to give them the best start in life.
