More than a quarter of single-parent families have a parent who works at the weekend, cutting into the time they have to spend with their children. This is having a major impact on family life, new research reveals.
One in three families with children, more than 2.4 million, has a parent who regularly works at the weekend, the report, Keep Time for Children: The Incidence of Weekend Working, from the National Centre for Social Research reveals. And the proportion rises to more than 40 per cent of families with at least one working parent.
Researchers from the independent organisation looked at data gathered in the UK Labour Force Survey from 1992 to 2003.
