Waitrose to help prepare young prisoners for work

Supermarket chain Waitrose has teamed up with HMP/YOI Littlehey to help young offenders get into work.

The project will see the supermarket’s personnel team in Cambridgeshire run monthly sessions to give young prisoners an insight into the food industry and develop their job-hunting skills.

The classroom-based sessions, created in conjunction with the Huntingdon-based YOI’s education provider A4e, will teach the young people about compiling CVs, customer service, applying for jobs and interview techniques.

Around 10 young people will attend each session.

The project, which began this month, is designed to help the young offenders complete a BTEC in business.

If successful, the supermarket hopes to extend the scheme to other YOIs across the country.

Helen Hyde, personnel director at Waitrose, said: “Waitrose is committed to helping young people get into work, particularly during these difficult economic times.

“The teams in our branches are really passionate about working with young people to help them develop their understanding of the food industry and inspire them in their endeavours to get into the workplace.”
