YOIs to develop physical activity and wellbeing strategies for young prisoners

2 mins read Health Youth Justice
Young offender institutions (YOI) in England and Wales will be required to develop physical activity and wellbeing strategies, following an independent review of sport in prisons.

The A Sporting Chance review by Professor Rosie Meek of Royal Holloway, University of London, recommended all youth custodial establishments develop integrated strategies to overcome a lack of co-ordination of physical activity opportunities in prisons.

Meek's review found that physical education teams and wing staff often fail to work together and that the lack of co-ordination is often exacerbated when the establishment also works with external education and healthcare providers.

In its response to the review, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) promised to review its existing policies on the provision of physical activity in YOIs. It also pledged to work with every YOI to develop physical activity strategies.
