Trial helpline for parents not receiving enough referrals

A one-to-one telephone support service run by parenting support charity Parentline Plus is not receiving enough referrals from schools, children's centres and health visiting teams, according to an evaluation.

The Parentline Plus Extended Telephone Support Service (ETS) pilot was launched in 2008 with the aim of providing one-to-one telephone support for parents suffering problems relating to family relationships, looking after themselves, and support outside the family.

A Department for Children, Schools and Families-commissioned (DCSF) evaluation of the first year (2008/09) of the three-year pilot concluded that the "slow pace of referrals" had done little to demonstrate the project's full potential.

It said that "further work was needed to encourage schools, children's centres and health visiting teams to make referrals".

But the evaluation also said the pilot was offering a "high quality service to parents that met parents' expectations and was appropriate".
