A telephone helpline offering ongoing one-to-one support to parents is making a difference, researchers have concluded.
Parentline Plus' individual telephone support service offers advice to those with children who face severe difficulties. Parents are assigned a particular helpline worker who calls them every week for up to six weeks to offer advice and support. Calls are made at times that suit the family.
The evaluation of the service by the Thomas Coram Research Unit at the University of London found it "made a real and significant impact to parents' wellbeing".
The study questioned 122 parents who had used the service. Three quarters said their situation had improved as a result of the one-to-one telephone support, although just over a fifth said it made no difference.
