SEND inclusion to be key focus of government’s curriculum review

Barriers faced by disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools will be central to a government-commissioned review of the school curriculum.

Professor Becky Francis, chief executive of the Education Endowment Foundation, will chair the review of the current curriculum and assessment system in schools.

“The review will look closely at the key challenges to attainment for young people, and the barriers which hold children back from the opportunities and life chances they deserve – in particular those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, or with SEND,” a Department for Education spokesperson has said.

The review looks set to examine how SEND support can be better embedded in mainstream schools, which was a key message in the previous government’s SEND and AP Improvement Plan, published last year.
