Scotland to hold young carers festival

1 min read Social Care
The Scottish Government has handed the Princes Royal Trust for Carers 200,000 to organise a festival for young carers.

The event is being held not only to give young carers a break but also to collect their views as part of a consultation into proposals for a national young carers forum.

The forum, which will provide a link between government and young carers, is one of a number of recommendations to emerge from the Scottish Government’s 2005 Care 21 document into the future of care.

It is estimated that around 500 young carers will attend the event, called the Young Carers Festival and taking place on 13 and 14 September in West Linton, near Edinburgh. Activities include bungee runs, news production sessions, and football coaching.

A spokeswoman from the Prince Royal Trust for Carers said: “This event gives young carers the chance to have their say about the remit of this proposed forum as well as have fun. They are all members of local young carers centres, which will look after the people they care for while they are away, giving them peace of mind.”

Also attending the festival will be Scotland’s children’s minister Adam Ingram, MSP's and local authority representatives.
