A Tesco Express store has had its licence to sell alcohol suspended for 21 days after a local safeguarding children board made representations against it.

The store in Hurst Street, Birmingham, was found to have sold alcohol totwo under-18 test purchasers, who went into the store in October lastyear.

Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board made representations at licensingsub-committee hearings and a subsequent appeal by Tesco last week, whichwas dismissed by deputy district judge Vijaya Munro at BirminghamMagistrates Court. She said: "There is a lack of adequate training forstaff to ensure they are aware of their duties andresponsibilities."

The store has to stop selling alcohol for 21 days from tomorrow (12July), must have adequate training for staff, and implement the Think 21initiative, where anyone who looks under 21 has their age checked.
