Quality of Croydon YOT assessments 'often insufficient', say inspectors

More must be done to improve the quality of work at a London youth offending team (YOT) affected by the riots, inspectors have said.

An inspection of Croydon YOT found that last summer’s riots had put additional pressures on the service with demands from courts for pre-sentence reports rising alongside caseloads in general. However, the quality of assessments taking place was deemed to be "often insufficient".

Assessments of the risk posed by young people to others was found to be inaccurate in 39 per cent of cases. "This was often due to a failure to fully update information copied from previous assessments," the report states.

Meanwhile, assessments of vulnerability were deemed not of sufficient quality in 55 per cent of cases.

Overall, safeguarding aspects of the work were done well 65 per cent of the time, public protection aspects were done well 56 per cent of the time, and the work to make each individual less likely to reoffend was done well 72 per cent of the time.
