Professionals turning to teaching want a rewarding job

Teaching is becoming a more desirable career as the recession prompts many banking, management, architecture and legal professionals to look for a more rewarding job, according to research.

There has been a 50 per cent increase in enquiries about teaching training over the past year, and people increasingly want a career in which they inspire others and "make a difference", a report said.

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) report Added Values: Why Professionals Could be Turning to Teaching revealed there has been a significant decrease in the importance of factors like "making people envious of me" and "having manager in my title" to people over the past 12 months.

Graham Holley, chief executive of the TDA, said: "This report shows that, while teaching is certainly not the job for everyone, there is a large pool of people who have the right motivations for changing careers and entering the classroom."
