Public takes dim view of teaching

The public sees teaching as a poorly paid job that offers little chance of career progression, a Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) report has revealed.

The research found that 80 per cent of students significantly underestimate teachers' pay, with a quarter of participants evaluating a London starting salary at £7,000 short of the actual figure.

Perceptions of career progression opportunities were similarly downbeat. According to the report, the public ranks teaching as one of the worst professions for career development, with two-thirds of graduates believing that teaching offers limited chances of promotion.
