Prevention still makes economic sense, say youth service leaders

Youth sector leaders have called for youth services to be protected in the face of spending cuts being planned by the new government.

Fiona Blacke, chief executive of The National Youth Agency, said: "I hope there will be a collective understanding that, if you have to make cuts, the wrong things to cut are preventative services that really make a difference to young people."

Youth services have been the victim of heavy cuts in local authorities around the country in recent months. The Liberal Democrats had pledged to put these services on a statutory footing to avoid further cuts if they got into power. But the Conservatives have always said they want to see more youth services outsourced to voluntary sector prioviders. It is not yet clear what action the new government will take or which ministers will lead on youth issues for the new coalition government.
