Children in Hull will have the chance to hold local politicians to account with the creation of a young people's scrutiny committee.

Hull City Council has announced its intention to form the committee inthe autumn. It will be made up of young people from each of the city'sseven youth forums, the central Coalition of Hull's Young People andmembers of the city's new youth parliament.

They will be able to examine council decisions and explore what'shappening with issues they feel are important right across councilservices, said Michele Priest, the city council's principal childcaremanager.

This is the latest step in a concerted effort to engage young people inshaping services and influencing decision-making in Hull. The authorityrecently published its children and young people plan and announced itwould judge services on six outcomes. This breaks away from theGovernment's five Every Child Matters outcomes, which all localauthorities must now take into account.
