Parliament must examine how new bills can promote children's rights

1 min read Social Care
The government must consider both possible threats to and opportunities for the promotion of children's human rights when ploughing ahead with its legislative programme set out in the Queen's Speech this week, campaigners have urged.

The Children's Rights Alliance for England (Crae) has committed to offer support to MPs to help strengthen legal protection for children's rights throughout the next parliamentary session.

Listing the ten bills outlined by the coalition government, Crae has summarised areas that need to be addressed. The document states: "The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and ratified by the UK in December 1991.

"October 2008 saw the third examination of the UK government's implementation of the convention, which resulted in almost 120 recommendations detailing where more needs to be done to strengthen children's human rights in England."
