ChildRIGHT: The coalition's impact on children's rights

As the new government sets out its policies for the coming parliament, Holly Rogalski, legal research and information officer at the Children's Legal Centre, looks at the changes in store on issues of children's rights.

The new coalition government has set out the legislative and policy changes that it hopes to implement. Both the Queen's Speech and the Programme for Government, published on 20 May, provided insight into the changes that are planned.

Greater protection of children's rights?

The new government, among other initiatives, has pledged to end the immigration detention of children, and has committed to reducing child poverty and to reforming the manner in which DNA is collected and stored. Each of these proposals would have a significant impact on the rights of children and young people in the UK, and, if properly implemented, would go some way toward ensuring that the government addresses some of the recommendations made by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in its periodic review of the UK government in 2008.
