Out-of-hours learning: Children to attend university classes

Universities will provide out- of-hours learning for gifted and talented children across England as part of a 3.6m Government programme launched last week.

Nine "excellence hubs" will be set up at universities, and will offer upto 3,000 places on residential, non-residential and online courses.Junior schools minister Lord Andrew Adonis said: "These new regionalsummer schools harness the expertise of our leading universities for thebenefit of gifted and talented pupils in state schools."

Each hub will make 10 per cent of its places available free of charge tothose from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as some subsidised places.Stephen Tommis, director of the National Association for GiftedChildren, welcomed the announcement and said it was vital that theprogramme was accessible for all children.

"Anything that adds to the enrichment programme overall is to bewelcomed, but the selection criteria needs to allow for parents on lowincomes and ensure it is open to all," he said.
