1 min read
The Government last week launched a partnership to improve the education of children with communication disabilities.

The 900,000 scheme aims to improve the education of children withcommunication disabilities. It is the second in a series of Departmentfor Education and Skills projects to help children who have specialeducational needs.

The Communication Trust brings together the DfES, BT's Better WorldCampaign, the Council for Disabled Children and charities I Can andAfasic. It will try to raise awareness of communication disabilities, develop training for teachers, improve joint working on the issue andcollect evidence on effective practice.

Anita Kerwin-Nye, the trust's programme director, said: "Communicationis the foundation life skill. But it lacks the 'brand' recognition ofautism, because it is invisible and not even understood among competentchildren's professionals. The Communication Trust will play a key rolein ensuring that professionals access the training and advice they needto support the children they serve, and will act as a conduit betweenprofessionals and providers."
