Disadvantaged pupils to be supported into university

1 min read Education
Above-average pupils from poor backgrounds will receive support to get to university as part of a package of measuring promoting links between universities and schools.

By 2012, all pupils from the top fifty per cent of achievers with low income backgrounds will be guaranteed a structured package of mentoring, advice and support to get to university, higher education minister David Lammy said.

Support could include programmes of university visits, careers counselling and summer schools.

"We want to ensure that the most talented and hard-working children and young people are given every chance to achieve their full potential, whatever their background," said Lammy. "Over 50 per cent of young people from every social class say they want to go to university and the number of people at university is rising. This is a challenging agenda and there is more to do."
