Project Higher Education Access for Schools Programme (Heaps)
Funding Heaps costs around £240,000 a year and is funded through sponsorship from organisations including private equity group BlackRock
Purpose To help ensure more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds get into university
Background Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to progress to higher education than their peers. When it comes to securing places at top universities the chances are even slimmer. Research published by the Sutton Trust in 2010 found that only two per cent of those who won places at England’s top universities between 2005 to 2007 qualified for free school meals, compared with 72.2 per cent of other state school pupils and more than a quarter from private schools.
