The report, "Twelve outstanding secondary schools. Excelling against the odds", highlights best practice in schools that have been consistently rated as outstanding, despite being located in deprived communities.
A strong emphasis on leadership, good continuing professional development for staff and imaginative lessons were also identified as key factors in the schools' success.
In some of the schools teachers acted as mentors for new teachers and others insisted on meeting the parents of repeat absentees.
Deprivation has traditionally been associated with low academic attainment, but all the schools in the report serve poor urban communities where an above-average proportion of pupils receive free school meals.
