Ofsted highlights outstanding special schools

1 min read Education
Ofsted has named the 12 best special educational needs schools in the country.

The report focuses on maintained special needs schools, pupil referral units and hospital schools that were judged "outstanding" by inspectors. It was produced to share good practice and inspire others in the special educational needs sector.

Among the common characteristics at the schools were strong partnerships with other education and health providers, the ability to refine teaching swiftly to meet the needs of individual children, and involving pupils in decisions surrounding the running of schools.

Ofsted’s chief inspector Christine Gilbert said: "I am sure what these schools do can be replicated by others. This report presents a challenge for those that are not yet outstanding. Mainstream schools also have much to learn from some of the approaches described."

Among those to be praised was Piper Hill High School, Westminster, which caters for 11- to 19-year-olds with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour. The report details how the school council is involved in interviewing staff and have developed their own questions.

Other schools featured in the list include Ash Field School, Leicester, for four- to 19-year-olds with physical and emotional special needs, and Cuckmere House School, East Sussex, for five- to 16-year-olds with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
