The educational watchdog has today published a report, Sustaining Improvement, looking at 14 formerly inadequate schools which have moved out of special measures.
Schools which did well in improving standards used self-assessments and created a strong school identity.
Actions taken included training to improve staff skills and confidence, setting high expectations, managing behaviour and improving inclusion.
Schools need to be honest about what is going wrong and why and involve everyone, especially pupils, in the journey out of special measures.
Chief inspector of schools, Christine Gilbert, said: If schools placed in special measures are willing to face up to the need for change and take appropriate action, they can improve very quickly and become outstanding schools.
