Ofsted rates Tameside ‘inadequate’ amid rising caseloads

Tameside Council’s children’s services has been handed Ofsted’s lowest rating after an inspection found concerns around rising caseloads, an “over reliance” on temporary staff and “serious failures” in protecting children.

Following their visit in December inspectors raised concerns that even though staff turnover has improved “caseloads in some areas of the service have increased”.

The department is also still too reliant on agency and newly qualified staff, inspectors add.

Their concerns have seen the department downgraded to “inadequate” after being rated as “requires improvement” four years ago following its previous full inspection.

“Children who need help and protection are not always identified at the earliest opportunity,” said Ofsted’s inspection report.

The department is also blighted by “insufficient analysis of children’s individual experiences” which are needed to make informed decisions.
