NSPCC plans 50m helpline expansion

1 min read Social Care
The NSPCC plans a 50m expansion of its helpline services for children who suffer from abuse and for those reporting suspected cases of child abuse.

It hopes to recruit more counsellors in order to deal with the 95,000 calls per year, 10,000 of which warrant referral to the children's services or police.

Such is the scale of child abuse in UK communities that the demand for help cannot be met. Counsellors are currently over-stretched; for every four calls they answer, there is one that they cannot take.

The NSPCC will attempt to tackle this need for more resources by raising the number of helpline staff from 90 to 120, and expanding the ChildLine volunteer team by around 50 per cent from 1,200 to 1,780, over the next three years.
