Between April and September 2024, there were 3,879 contacts of this kind - representing a 19% increase on the same period in 2023 when there were 3,258.

The charity, which runs the Domestic Abuse, Recovering Together (DART) recovery programme for children, is predicting that the upward trend will continue into the festive season.

The service brings together mothers and children in group sessions to discuss their experiences, strengthen their relationships and explore coping strategies.

The NSPCC’s Childline service delivered over 500 counselling sessions to children on the topic in the same six-month period.

Its newly-launched Christmas TV advert features a victim of neglect being supported by a trained counsellor during the holiday.
