Childline set for a surge in counselling calls as Christmas approaches

More than 14,000 counselling sessions surrounding abuse and neglect have been carried out by Childline in the past year, with figures expected to rise during the Christmas holidays.

Childline, run by the NSPCC, say its service at Christmas is "a lifeline for vulnerable children and young people", as the closure of schools means children have reduced contact with wider support networks. The service is expecting to see a surge in counselling calls over the Christmas period this year.

Last year, counsellors for the service delivered 400 sessions on abuse and neglect from 24 December to 4 January, making it the second highest month in the year for children reaching out for support regarding emotional abuse.

In more than 4,000 of Childline’s counselling sessions, 31 per cent of children revealed that they had not told anyone about their experiences of abuse before.
